Family Life by Akhil Sharma is in part the story of the Indian immigrant in the United States. But mostly it is the story of a family, struck by tragedy and coming apart because of its ceaseless weight. Ajay and his older brother Birju come to the United States from India when Ajay is 8 years old. The same is true of Ajay Mishra, Sharma’s fictional counterpart in his new “autobiographical novel”, Family Life. For both Ajay and Sharma, tragedy powers achievement.
